Nutrition Educator

Certifies clients for participation in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC Program) according to the WIC Manual DHM 150-24. Provides nutrition counseling, education and follow-up services to WIC Program clients. Promotes and supports breastfeeding among WIC clients. Develops nutrition care plans and documents information in WIC data system. Follows policies and procedures for collection, entry and management of data as well as operation of the WIC data system (FL WiSE) according to the WIC User Manual for clinic. Develops high risk nutrition care plans for high risk clients. Assures scheduling of follow-up counseling sessions. Performs anthropometric duties to include hemoglobin, as needed.

Designs nutrition educational materials for use in the WIC Program. Assists with training of new WIC nutrition staff in the certification and counseling process. Assists with the development and evaluation of the nutrition program plan and other documents as needed for the WIC Program.

Two incumbents will be selected to work in positions in either the St. Petersburg or the Pinellas Park Centers of the Health Department.

Responsibilities includes:

  • Determine Nutritional risk eligibility for the WIC program.
  • Provide nutrition education and counseling to WIC clients.
  • Promote and support breastfeeding for prenatal and postpartum clients.
  • Refer clients for needed services within the health department and within the community.
  • Document all services within the FL Wise System.
  • Develop nutrition care plans for high risk clients.
  • Perform height, weight and hemoglobin test on WIC clients.
  • Assist supervisor with working WIC reports.
  • Assign appropriate WIC food packages and make food package changes as needed.
  • Issue WIC benefits as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities necessary for this position:

  • Utilization of equipment including anthropometric equipment, hematology equipment and computer equipment.
  • Knowledge of normal nutrition principles and food needs throughout the life cycle.
  • Ability to determine nutritional risk and needs and nutrition education plans for individuals including low risk, high risk.
  • Ability to provide nutrition education and breastfeeding promotion to others in groups or individual instruction.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to provide client-centered nutrition counseling to WIC clients.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's or master's degree in Nutrition, Public Health Nutrition, Dietetics, or Food and Nutrition from a school that is accredited by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least one year of WIC program experience as a Nutritionist or Nutrition Educator.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
