Job Summary: The SQL Server Database Administrator implements, supports and maintains SQL Server database software, and ensures its performance, availability, and security across an enterprise. He/she creates architecture design standards for SQL server and reviews project deliverables to ensure proposed solutions meet or exceed established standards. He/she provides outstanding service to both internal and external customers for our SaaS platform in a 24x7 highly-available environment. Duties and Responsibilities: Configure Microsoft SQL Server installations to meet defined best practices Install and patch SQL Server software for standalone and clustered configurations Monitor and remediate issues with SQL Server maintenance jobs to include backups, DBCC and re-indexing Perform SQL Server database migrations for hardware refreshes and SQL upgrades Manage SQL Clusters with primary focus on SQL 2014 and above running on Windows 2012 and above Troubleshoot database and instance performance problems Troubleshoot issues with SQL Server high-availability solutions to include Windows Failover Clusters and SQL Server AlwaysOn Implement and maintain database security according to best practice security guidelines Proactively monitor database systems to ensure minimum downtime Participate in database tuning to include add/drop/change indexes based on vendor and developer input Review SQL Server instances for compliance with documented best practices Provide excellent customer service for incident and service request tickets React and resolve all database related warning and alarms from database monitoring system Provide database backup and recovery operation according to given strategy Review and analyze critical patch information sent by Microsoft Manage database storage and capacity planning for internal objects and database files Provide 24x7 on call support as scheduled Architect, design, install, create architecture documentation, and performs operational support for all database environments Architect zero-data loss and high availability database environments for mission critical applications Assists application development teams in working with databases, planning and implementing production changes and assisting with query optimization, and pinpointing applications responsible for performance issues, deadlocks, etc. Responsible for analyzing and translating business information and technical requirements into solutions to achieve business objectives Creates enterprise data architecture, works with application and infrastructure teams to produce an optimal, high level, conceptual design for projects Creates project plans for complex projects and monitors and reports project status. Maintains a log of issues and coordinates activities to resolve them Implements and performs proactive system monitoring to ensure high-availability and performance. Performs ongoing performance tuning and optimization activities Understanding schema and dimension options beyond relational to include such techniques as star, cubes and other options to support best hosting options Executes DDL and DLL related changes including the moving and dropping of databases, adding and changing SQL Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science (or related field) 8 years of experience in general database administration in a mid-to-large Microsoft SQL Server environment Configuration of AlwaysOn availability groups, Log Shipping, etc. TSQL, index and data model tuning recommendations for poorly performing queries Monitoring and tuning SQL Server indexing strategies General knowledge of infrastructure technologies (storage model/design, Windows OS, Hyper-V, clustering, etc.) Experience in SQL database engine infrastructure and support, version 2012 and higher Ability to write and troubleshoot SQL Server automation scripts (backups, indexing, migrations, etc.) Ability to detect and troubleshoot SQL Server related CPU, Memory, I/O, disk space and other resource contention Expert knowledge of SQL installation, configuration and patching on standalone server, Windows failover cluster and SQL AlwaysOn cluster Expert knowledge of backups, restores, recovery models and backup strategy design and implementation. Expert knowledge of SQL Server best practices as defined by Microsoft and generally accepted in the DBA community Documentation skills for processes and procedures (creating KBs, work instructions, standards definitions, etc.) Knowledge of 3rd party monitoring tools and applications Creation/configuration/administration of SQL Servers in a virtual environment, including Azure Implementation of disaster recover / high-availability plans Development and execution of key production performance indicators Production support for databases and server infrastructure - provided by Dice
